Format requirements turn up everywhere — a platform that accepts JPEG but not WebP, a design tool that wants PNG, a page that would load faster with something more modern — and this decodes an image and re-encodes it into the format you pick using the browser's own codecs. It is a single-step conversion with no upload involved. Which format you choose has consequences worth knowing before you convert. JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparency is discarded and transparent areas come out solid, usually black or white; keep PNG or WebP if the image needs to sit on a coloured background. WebP produces noticeably smaller files than either JPEG or PNG at comparable quality and is supported by every current browser. And converting an animated source into a still format keeps a single frame, discarding the animation entirely. Because the browser does the decoding and encoding in the page, the file itself is never sent anywhere.
