What is EMI Calculator and Why Use It?
Before taking a home, car or personal loan, the number people want is the monthly instalment, and this works it out with the standard reducing-balance formula: each equal payment covers the interest accrued that month and puts the remainder toward the principal. Enter the amount, the annual rate and the term, and you get the EMI, the total interest and the total repayable, plus an amortisation schedule showing how the split shifts from mostly interest early on to mostly principal later. Check the term unit before trusting anything — twenty years and twenty months are very different loans and the same digits describe both. The figure assumes a fixed rate for the whole term, so on a floating-rate loan either the instalment or the term will change when rates move. Processing fees, insurance and prepayment charges are excluded, which is why a lender's quote usually comes out slightly higher.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Enter your total loan principal amount (Home, Car, or Personal loan).
- 2
Input the annual interest rate and total loan repayment tenure in years.
- 3
View your monthly EMI, total interest payable, and monthly amortization table.
Formula / Calculations Explained
Standard Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) Formula
Computes fixed monthly loan payments by balancing the declining principal balance with reducing interest charges across the full repayment duration.
Important Considerations
- Check the term unit before trusting the figure — 20 years and 20 months are very different loans.
- Assumes a fixed rate for the whole term. On a floating-rate loan the EMI or the term will change when the rate moves.
- Processing fees, insurance and prepayment charges are not included, so a lender's quote will usually be a little higher.
- An estimate for comparison and planning, not an offer. Your lender's figure is the one that counts.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an EMI and how is it structured?▼
Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) is a fixed monthly payment made to lenders, consisting of both principal repayment and accrued interest.
How does loan tenure affect total interest payable?▼
A longer tenure reduces your monthly EMI amount but significantly increases the total interest paid over the life of the loan.
Is this loan EMI calculator free and private?▼
Yes, all loan calculations are performed locally in your browser with zero data sent to lenders or advertisers.
Monthly EMI per ₹1 Lakh Loan Amount Table
Quick reference monthly installment (EMI) amounts for a ₹100,000 loan balance across common home and personal loan interest rates and tenures.
| Interest Rate (p.a.) | 5-Year Loan (60 Months) | 10-Year Loan (120 Months) | 20-Year Loan (240 Months) |
|---|---|---|---|

Pro-tip for loan calculations: Multiply these numbers by your total principal in lakhs. For example, for a ₹25 Lakh home loan at 8.5% for 20 years, your EMI is approximately 25 × ₹868 = ₹21,700 per month.
Worked example
Example only — not financial adviceThis example runs the calculator's own EMI formula — [P × R × (1+R)^N] / [(1+R)^N − 1] — against a ₹10,00,000 loan at 8.5% per annum over 10 years. The monthly payment stays fixed at ₹12,399 for the full term; what shifts month to month is the mix behind it — mostly interest early on, mostly principal by the end, as the sample rows below show.
| Example input | Value |
|---|---|
| Loan amount | ₹10,00,000 |
| Interest rate | 8.5% per annum |
| Tenure | 10 years (120 months) |
| Monthly EMI | ₹12,399 |
| Total interest | ₹4,87,828 |
| Total payment | ₹14,87,828 |
| Month | Payment | Principal | Interest | Balance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ₹12,399 | ₹5,315 | ₹7,083 | ₹9,94,685 |
| 12 | ₹12,399 | ₹5,744 | ₹6,654 | ₹9,33,673 |
| 24 | ₹12,399 | ₹6,252 | ₹6,146 | ₹8,61,483 |
| 60 | ₹12,399 | ₹8,061 | ₹4,338 | ₹6,04,321 |
| 120 | ₹12,399 | ₹12,311 | ₹87 | ₹0 |
