What is UUID Generator and Why Use It?
Unique identifiers are needed constantly — primary keys, request IDs for tracing, filenames that must not collide, idempotency tokens — and this produces them in batches of up to a hundred. Version 4 UUIDs are 122 bits drawn from the browser's cryptographic random number generator, which makes them the sensible default for almost everything. Version 1 is built from the current timestamp plus a random node component, so identifiers sort roughly in creation order, at the cost of revealing when each was made; reach for it only when that ordering genuinely matters to you. Because generation happens in the page and nothing is transmitted, the values are safe to use where secrecy matters, not merely as opaque keys. Collisions with version 4 are not a practical concern: the space is large enough that duplicate identifiers are not something applications need to design defences around.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Choose between UUID Version 4 (random) or Version 1 (timestamped).
- 2
Specify how many unique UUIDs you want to generate (up to 100).
- 3
Click Generate and copy single IDs or bulk export the complete list.
Formula / Calculations Explained
RFC 4122 Cryptographic UUID Specification
Version 4 UUIDs generate 122 cryptographically secure pseudo-random bits using the browser's crypto.getRandomValues API with negligible collision odds.
Important Considerations
- v4 is the right default for almost everything. Reach for v1 only when time ordering genuinely matters.
- Collisions with v4 are not a practical concern — the space is large enough that duplicates are not something to design around.
- Generated here in your browser, so these never touch a network and are safe to use as secrets or primary keys.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these UUIDs cryptographically secure?▼
Yes. They are generated using the browser's native window.crypto.getRandomValues API, making them safe for database keys and session tokens.
What is the probability of a UUID collision?▼
For version 4 UUIDs, the probability of finding a duplicate is astronomically low: less than one in a billion after generating billions of IDs.
Do generated UUIDs touch any external server?▼
No. UUIDs are synthesized purely in your device's memory and are never transmitted across the network.
