What is URL Encoder / Decoder and Why Use It?
Characters that carry structural meaning in a URL — spaces, ampersands, question marks, slashes, anything non-ASCII — have to be percent-escaped before they can sit inside a query string or path, and this converts them in both directions. It comes up whenever a value is being assembled into a link by hand: a search term with spaces, a redirect target passed as a parameter, a filename with accented characters, or a signed value being debugged. The single most useful rule is to encode individual parameter values rather than a whole assembled URL, because encoding the complete address escapes the very `?` and `&` that give it structure and produces a link that no longer works. Decoding a string that was never encoded is harmless, but decoding twice can corrupt values that legitimately contain a percent sign, so decode once and check the result. Both directions run in the page, so a URL carrying a token is never sent to a third-party site.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Select whether to Encode or Decode your URL text.
- 2
Paste the full URL or individual query parameter into the box.
- 3
Copy the sanitized, percent-encoded string for use in web requests.
Formula / Calculations Explained
Percent-Encoding (RFC 3986 Standard)
Replaces reserved and non-ASCII characters with a '%' symbol followed by two hexadecimal digits representing their UTF-8 byte values.
Important Considerations
- Encode individual parameter values, not a whole assembled URL — encoding the whole thing escapes the ? and & that give it structure.
- Decoding a string that was never encoded is harmless, but decoding twice can corrupt values that legitimately contain a % character.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?▼
encodeURI preserves protocol markers and slashes for full web addresses, whereas encodeURIComponent escapes separators for individual query parameters.
Does it support international UTF-8 characters?▼
Yes, characters in all languages and emojis are accurately converted into valid multi-byte percent-encoded escape sequences.
Are query parameters logged on your servers?▼
No, all URL transformations run strictly client-side in your browser, protecting sensitive query params and tokens.
